Frequently Asked Questions
Dr. K.K. Logue

Why is size of treat important?
There are two kinds of treats, the reward treat and the treat designed to keep the dog occupied for a period of time
fulfilling a need to chew and cleaning teeth.  The important factor in giving treats is the interaction with the pet and the
owner.  We want a reasonable size treat so it does not take long to eat and has a number of calories that are consistent
with the dog's size.

On the other hand, the chew treats (beefhides and green bones) engage the dog to chew for a period of time so
hardness is important.  We want it soft enough so it will encourage the dog to chew, but not too hard that it will be
chewed too quickly.  Importantly the treat must be of the appropriate size so that the entire treat cannot be swallowed at
once causing gastric blockage or difficulty.
